Balcony Battles: When To Split Upper & Lower Mains?

http://www.prosoundweb.com/article/balcony_battles_when_to_split_upper_lower_mains/

This a article was about how to solve and set up sound for people sitting in the balcony using the main speakers. When running sound for a live sound production is it important to make sure that  everyone even people in the balcony seats can hear the band. Running a live sound event you normally have 2 or more set of speakers that you can break into 3 sections the left, center, and right. The article talks about how everyone loves to break the mains into left and right; but up and down not so much. I have never broken the mains up and down before so in curious at what the outcome of this might be?
In this figure you can see a typical main speaker set up.  The A figure is the normal distance from the main speakers to the audience.  But pus the speaker closer to the audience you have to split the speakers up and down so the listers get a good clear sound.
